Pink Romantic Tutu

This bodice is made for a scene from "Gilded Bat", below.   I used the old tutu to go with it when I made the bodice.

 But the tutu didn't have nice movement, so I made the tutu a few years later for this bodice for "Sleeping Beauty".   These were used with Aurora's Friend's tutu and other costumes for younger dancers that was white and pink.  Whole Garland Waltz costumes were pink and it was very lovely.

A Rose for Princess Aurora

Sleeping Beauty has a lots of good material to do the craft class with.  A crown for the princess, a wand for the fairies....  This is a rose for Rose Adagio.  

This gives great chance to talk to kids about the dance.  Because it's the climax of the 1st act.  It is also very very difficult part of Aurora.  I think they should know how hard it is to be on pointe.  Because ballet is not all about prettiness.  

I love making tissue flowers because it's not messy!  Some pre-schoolers are not really clean crafters so working with glue could be disastrous.  So I like projects without glue.

Aurora's Friend (Sleeping Beauty)

I have done so much for this particular studio so it's so hard to remember how this tutu was came together.  I made the bodice and skirts, that's for sure.

The bodice was originally white.  It was made for Chopiniana.  So there were 20 or more white bodices laying around, after we had Swan Lake, we started recycling them.  

Aurora's friends are sometimes more regal looking.  I guess when you think about it, they must be some royalty of sort to be friends with Princess.  But this production, the friends lead the Garland Dance, so we kept them in peasant like costumes.  

The flower was changed to more muted kind for the show.   (Picture on top)

Now that I tried to remember, I think the romantic tutu was the one form Chopiniana also.  This was 5 layered white tutu.  I dyed the skirt pink.  But instead of just put the skirt in a pink dye bath, I dyed the inside 3 layers in one kind of pink, and 2nd layer form top in Yellowish color, and first layer in different kind of pink.  Layering different colored tulle give the depth to the tutu.  Just like the impressionist layered the different paints to achieve one color, I love doing this with tulle.

Aurora Act 3 (Sleeping Beauty)

This tutu was made for White Swan.  But I took out all the decorations and turned it into the tutu for Sleeping Beauty.  Act 3 is Aurora's Wedding, and it's very busy with all the characters form fairy tales such as Red Riding Hood and Wolf, Puss in Boots and White Cat, etc.  Very colorful.  This production had Matryoshka Dolls which were consisted of 16 corps, so it was really busy!  Simple white tutu stood out as a principle.
